A stunning Regency style jug in a Toleware style. derived from the French tôle peinte or "painted sheet metal". The style is synonymous with japanning. This first became fashionable in 18th-century Europe, used to decorate wood, leather and tin in imitation of celebrated lacquerwork of the Japanese.
