Can you tell me more about what makes the Vintage Sofa Company different?
We are a family run business, and are proud to be different - stocking unusual, beautiful vintage-inspired sofas, chairs, footstools, rugs and more. We specialise in high-quality leather, Harris Tweed and sublime velvet sofas, that look amazing and feel even better. Our sofas are British made, using time-honoured techniques and quality materials, all fairly priced.
We have one rule - we only sell what we love. It is very important to us that when customers visit they can enjoy beautiful, well-made, quality pieces of furniture that are good value money and will be right for their homes and family. These are lovingly selected and often designed by us too. If it’s not right for our home, we wouldn’t suggest it for yours. Furniture has to be practical as well as beautiful to stand the test of time and we’re keen to ensure our sofas aren’t just a flash in the pan, but another member of your family.
We are here to ensure that dreaming about your new look room is as fun in reality as it is in your daydreams! You won’t find pushy sales people, just tea in the pot and maybe a chocolate brownie (if we’ve been baking…) And if you’d prefer to shop online and would like to know a bit more about the products we stock - just give us a call to book an online appointment at a time that suits you.
I’m not sure what kind of thing I’m looking for, can I book an online consultation appointment?
Absolutely. Choosing a sofa that’s part of your home for years to come is a big decision. We are happy to help guide you through our different ranges, size options and bespoke finishes. You can find out more about our customisable options in our blog here. Just complete our form, call us on 01422 761000 or email sales@vintagesofa.co.uk for help and advice.
Do you sell accessories?

What’s Jowler Mill’s history?
Jowler Mill is a three storey stone built mill, the mill was first built c.1818 and was a paper mill powered by the nearby Sutton Dam. Over the years it feel into disrepair and needed some love. We took the building on in 2015 and immediately fell in love with it. That’s not to say the renovation has been for the faint hearted, we’ve been on quite the journey, and one which continues today, recently having refilled the mill pond. You can find out more about our journey in our film here.
Do you send out fabric swatches?
Yes, you can order up to 6 swatches. Just drop us a message and we’ll bob them in the post…
Can you tell me about the leather you use?
We use the best leather you can buy as it’s the most natural, soft and gracefully supple - that beautiful buttery leather that smells amazing and is so soft to touch. As a natural product, the natural qualities of the leather are enhanced. Nearly all of our leathers come from Italy, the best place in the world for this specialist leather. Our leather is hand dyed with special aniline dye which permeates the hide. Unlike a lower quality bonded leather which sits on top, the result is a beautiful natural colour which enhances the hide and doesn’t rub off or peel. Over time it will develop its own beautiful natural patina, much like a fingerprint, and you’ll have something that’s one of a kind!
How durable is your velvet?
Many of our velvets have at least 50,000 rub count - often higher than that. A common misconception about velvet is that it’s a high-maintenance material. Well, let us bust that myth right now! Synthetic velvet is less susceptible to marking, fading or crushing. This makes it more durable and suited to daily use.
Italian velvet is different composed with viscose and cotton, it’s a natural product which is slightly more volatile. This is often longer pile and a vintage style, this will change over time with use and some velvets are deliberately mottled, with more of a marbled feel, this is really a question of taste and what you are looking for and what your family setup is.
We always say, drop us an email or speak to us in the showroom and we can advise you - we are big believers in form and function - we want it to look good, but it needs to be practical for you too!
What are the Benefits of Velvet Sofas?
First and foremost, can you beat that soft velvet look and feel? We have a range of sublime velvets that live up to their name, gently shimmering and beautifully soft, they are so luxe and sophisticated.
Our velvet sofas have far more depth than a plain material, due to the way velvet subtly picks up the light and the dense pile which gives it that saturated colour.
Velvets also give the opportunity to be bold and add to a room, they suit all décor styles whether that’s contemporary or classic. You can create a statement with a pop of colour, like our Albert range, be ultra sophisticated with the rich, deep shades, like our Hepburn, or you opt for the classic choice with a farrow and ball shade, like our sublime Rust or Olive as seen on the Howard range.
Oh and we should also mention that of course you can mix and match too, one range that offers this is the Lamour, where you can add a contrasting back panel for effortless style points and that eclectic look.
Are Chesterfield Sofas Comfortable?
Chesterfields are classically low backed supportive sofas, with a beautiful deep button style. They are one of those classic styles that requires no maintenance to look impeccable and won’t date. They are really comfy too. We have a couple of different styles and depths to choose from so you can find just the right one for you just like goldilocks. If you are tall, our Oskars and Harvard collections really allow you to spread out in a way most sofas don’t due to their depth. But if you have a smaller space, or are shorter in stature, we also stock the beautiful Banbury which has a smaller footprint and shallower seat, but still has that elegant shape and classic style.
What are the benefits of Harris Tweed?
There are so many! Harris Tweed is made from 100% British wool, it’s mixed to a unique recipe - it’s a natural, sustainable product that’s breathable and even flame resistant! Harris Tweed has long been the choice of the discerning from the gentry of the 18th century to today’s catwalks and couturiers. We stock products in two exquisite, certified Harris Tweeds – Grey and Gamekeeper Thorn. Separate pigments of wool are carefully blended into special 'recipes' before being spun. The wool is handwoven by Islanders of the Outer Hebrides, with skills passed down from generation to generation. As Harris Tweed is made from 100% pure wool, the sofas are hardwearing; warm in winter and cool in summer, it resists water, cleans easily and is incredibly soft to touch. Best of all it’s a classic look that won’t date, looking smart and sophisticated, whether it’s for your country bolthole, or city pad.

How should I look after my sofas?
Harris Tweed
To keep your new sofa or chair looking good we advise that you delicately brush or vacuum it once a week.
Leather
Leather is a natural product and like a fingerprint, it features unique attributes such as shade, grain variation and natural markings, all of which enhance its beauty.
To keep it looking its best, dust your furniture regularly with a soft cloth. We advise against using a vacuum cleaner on leather. All leathers can be affected by light; we recommend it is positioned away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect against fading and premature wear. Aniline leathers are especially sensitive to sunlight. Position at least 30cm away from radiators and other heat sources.
Leather is a natural material and will not respond favourably to everyday cleaning products, water damage or abrasive materials. Before you clean your leather sofa, make sure you choose leather safe cleaning materials and if in doubt consult a leather cleaning professional.
Velvet
The most important way to maintain your velvet furniture is to clean it regularly but gently; a little brushing and regular careful vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner that has an upholstery attachment will go a long way. Gently shake cushions regularly to reduce wrinkles developing.
Do you offer guarantees on your sofas?
We offer a manufacturers guarantee on our new products and nearly all collections have frame guarantees. If you’d like to learn more, please email sales@vintagesofas.co.uk and we’d be happy to discuss the different options.
Technical Questions
How do corners fit together?
We have two mechanisms on our ranges, some securely fit together with brackets which are easily put together and some slot together nice and snuggly through their clever sliding design.
Are feet delivered on the sofas?
Your sofas come with transport legs to ensure your sofa arrives in tip-top condition. Because of the way your furniture is securely packaged for delivery, the feet are often parcelled up separately. Your sofa legs will arrive in a special bag within the wrapped sofa or are stored in a zipped pouch within the lining of the sofa, accessed from underneath. Please note that sofas are often delivered with transport legs to ensure your sofa arrives in perfect condition.
In the unlikely event that the feet for your sofa cannot be located, please contact our support line on 01422 761000 (Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm).
I only seem to have 2 casters with my sofa, not 4
Casters are only used on front legs of our sofas rather than back legs to ensure your sofa is supported properly. If you've ordered casters your sofa will also come with two back legs which may be packaged separately or stored within the pouch underneath your sofa.
Do you have to plump cushions?
Some of our ranges have extra feather scatter cushions or a scatter back style that look great with a little shake up, but we also stock some ranges that have no maintenance involved at all… it depends on what you are looking for really. Scatter backs are great for that sumptuous curl up comfort and full luxe look, but if you are after a completely low maintenance look we’d recommend a sprung back and base sofa like the Bertie. They look fabulous straight off the bat. If only the rest of us had that superpower!
