Footstool Buying Guide

Footstools, footrests, ottomans, poufs or pouffes have a lot of names - nearly as many as their uses but are still an overlooked staple in the home. Comfy for those tired feet, as a stylish coffee table, a useful spot for the remote, a place to hide all the clutter and even a cosy spot for your dog to nap - why wouldn’t you snap up this time serving staple? Back in the 80s nearly everyone had one. As the years have gone by they’ve slipped off the radar but we make the case to bring the handy stools back to where they belong - your living room!

Improved Comfort:

Reducing back strain propping your feet up will help you feel more relaxed as well as aiding circulation. It's that daily touch of luxury. No more puffy feet and swollen ankles. And don’t we all need a reason to put our feet up now and again? Now you’ve got one, backed by science!

Versatile Design:

With bucket loads of designs to choose from eclectic and eccentric to classic and contemporary, with all manner of sizes, styles and materials. You'll find round footstools or pouffes, there’s a footstool for every slipper.

Multifunctional footstools:

Beyond foot support, a footstool can be used as a small extra seat, a coffee table a side table or even as useful shoe storage! We’ve even got a footstool that transforms into a bed!

✔ Storage Footstools:

Helping you live clutter free, items can be stored inside the stool for a seamless look. Check out our storage footstools

Space-Saving footstools

Many footstools are compact and can easily fit into small spaces, some even specifically tuck under chairs making them ideal for smaller rooms and cosy nooks. We also point you in the direction of nesting footstools which stack one on top of another for the ultimate in multi-tasking magic.

How to Choose the Right Footstool:

Will your footstool be doubling up as a seat? Or perhaps used as a side table or coffee table? Or maybe for resting tired legs at the end of a long day? Perhaps you're short on storage? The answers to these questions will help you narrow down the dreamy design for you.

Once you’ve decided on where and how you want to use a footstool, you can decide what colour, material and height you need it to be.

What height should your footstool be?

We’ve found that the ideal height for a footstool sits somewhere between 30cm and 55cm. The exact height will depend on how you’d like to use it. Storage footstools tend to be taller to give you more square footage space.

If you’re looking to rest your feet on your footstool and perhaps use it as an extra chair, we’d recommend aiming for a lower height. Between 30cm and 50cm works well. We stock footstools that are part of a range and work very well to extend seating seamlessly - the Marnie footstool for example, as a luxurious feather top just like the rest of the collection and is the same height as the seats, making it ideal to use to extend the sofa and use as a day bed or chaise.

Try sitting on your sofa and use a stool or dining chair to test out different heights to determine the perfect dimensions that you need.

How to choose the right size footstool

Footstools are useful to zone areas and create a flow through your room, it’s all about balancing proportions.  Make sure you allow plenty of room to move around the stool but we always say go a little bigger if you can as they make a fabulous focal point to a room. And if in doubt, map them out.

Choosing the right shaped footstool

If you're looking for a multi-use footstool, then square footstools or rectangular footstools are fantastic options, they make a comfy spot as an extra seat. Round footstools add instant glamour, made for focal points.

How to choose a velvet or leather footstool

Now you’ve chosen your size, let’s think about finishes. Will you opt for a velvet or leather footstool? There are benefits to both options, so what’s best for you will depend on your personal style and what you want to use the footstool for.

Leather footstools are stylish and hard-wearing and a great option if you’ve got young kids or pets. They work with nearly all decor too and provide an effortless, timeless style.

On the other hand, velvet footstools come in a delicious collection of designs and colours, they can be the perfect way to add a luxury touch to your living room. Why not check out our velvet collection to find the perfect colour and style for your space?

Does my footstool have to match my sofa?

There’s no hard and fast rules, about matching your sofa with your footstool. We always say, consider how you will be using it and your design style - is it more cohesive or eclectic? Do you want your footstool to blend in or take centre stage? Don’t shy away from a slightly bolder choice if it suits your design vision. We stock loads of styles to suit different tastes from traditional buttery aniline leathers to glorious velvets and some fabrics work across multiple collections, just call in or drop us a message for more info.

Footstool as a feature

For a feature piece, a buttoned top always looks stunningly elegant especially when combined with a sumptuous velvet- we love the Spink & Edgar Royal Garden Sapphire Italian velvet footstool for a wow feature piece and the beautiful buttery grand scale Oskar aniline leather footstool. Both are completely different designs but effortlessly add so much depth and texture to a room.
