How We Measure Our Sofas

A Complete Sofa Size & Measuring Guide

Choosing a new sofa is exciting, but making sure it fits your room and through your doorway, is just as important. At Vintage Sofa Co., every sofa is measured using the same consistent method, so you can compare sizes with confidence and know exactly what to expect.

Whether you're looking for a 2-seater sofa, 3-seater sofa, corner sofa, armchair, or snuggler, here's exactly how we measure every piece.

Sofa Width

How we measure it

The overall width of a sofa is measured at its widest point, including the arms.

This is the measurement you'll need when checking:

  • Whether the sofa will fit against your wall
  • Room layout planning
  • Space between other furniture

Seat Width

Seat width measures the internal seating space between the arms, giving you a better idea of how much room you'll have to sit comfortably.

Sofa Depth

How we measure it

Overall depth is measured from the very front of the sofa to its deepest point at the back.

Depth is one of the biggest factors affecting comfort:

  • Deeper sofas are ideal for lounging
  • Shallower sofas offer a more upright sit

Seat Depth

Seat depth is measured from the front edge of the seat cushion to the point where the back cushions begin.

This helps you understand how much sitting space you'll have and whether the sofa offers a more relaxed or supportive seating position.

Sofa Height

How we measure it

Overall height is measured at the highest point of the sofa, whether that's:

  • the back cushions, or
  • the top of the sofa frame.

When measuring height, the feet are included in the overall dimensions.

Seat Height

Seat height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat cushion.

A higher seat can make getting in and out of the sofa easier, while a lower seat often creates a more relaxed, contemporary feel.

Arm Height

Arm height is measured from the floor to the highest point of the arm.

This can be useful if you're positioning the sofa beneath a window or pairing it with side tables.

Measuring Your Home Before Delivery

Before ordering your new sofa, we recommend checking:

✓ Doorway width and height

✓ Hallways and corridors

✓ Staircases and landings

✓ Lift dimensions (if applicable)

✓ Ceiling height on tight turns

✓ The final room where your sofa will live

Taking a few simple measurements beforehand can help ensure a smooth delivery.

FAQs

At Vintage Sofa Co., we use the same measuring method across our collections, so whether you're shopping for a leather sofa, velvet sofa, chesterfield, corner sofa, or snuggler chair, you can compare dimensions knowing they're measured consistently.

Are sofa dimensions approximate?

Our sofas are handcrafted, so slight manufacturing tolerances may occur. We recommend allowing a small amount of flexibility when planning your space.
Measurements are supplied by our manufacturers and are subject to a tolerance of approximately ±3 cm. For bespoke frame orders, measurements may vary by up to ±5 c

Does sofa width include the arms?

Yes. The published width is always the overall width, measured from the outside of one arm to the outside of the other.

What is the difference between sofa depth and seat depth?

Overall depth measures the full size of the sofa from front to back, while seat depth measures the distance from the front edge of the seat to the start of the back cushions.

How is sofa height measured?

Height is measured from the floor to the highest point of the sofa, whether that's the cushions or the frame. Feet are included in the overall measurement.
